Brazilian Adoptions
The children available for adoption in Brazil live
in orphanages. The majority of children available for adoption are 3 years
age and older. It is common to have siblings. It may be possible to adopt a
younger child alone, but that would be an unusual situation.
Information about Children
Brazil is a mix of Portuguese, Indian, African, Spanish,
Italian, and German. The children are
relatively healthy. Due to the
economic situation the major part of adoptable children is inside the range of
mulattos.
Advantages for Adoptive Parents
Brazil has placed the fewest restrictions on adoptive parents in the world.
Individuals and couples, both married and unmarried, with special needs may
adopt from Brazil. There are no age restrictions or religious requirements
placed on parents wishing to adopt, but the adoptive parents
must be 16 years older than the adoptive parents.
Approximate Waiting Period
There is a 60-day approval period during which adoptive parents are approved
by Brazilian authorities. Once all approvals have been completed the search
for an appropriate match is begun. The referral time can
not be predicted. However, our agency and staff in Brazil will do
our best to provide a quick referral.
Travel Requirements
Adoptive parents must travel to Brazil to pick up their child. The parents
are required to stay in Brazil for approximately 31 days. Or 16 days for a
child that is under 2 years of age. This time period accommodates time to
process the adoption in Brazil and complete the final visa
requirements. The Brazilian government requires the in-country stay so that the families can be observed with the children to assure
that a bonding has occurred.
Adoption Completion
The adoption is completed in Brazil during the adoptive parents' stay. Brazil
has signed the Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation
in Respect of Inter-country Adoption. The adoption is irrevocable.
