NEW EMBASSY PROCEDURE IN GUATEMALA

Guatemala Enacts New Adoption Law

The Guatemalan congress passed the new adoption law which will take effect on December 31,  2007.  Cases with a registered power of attorney shall be allowed to proceed under the old law.  To date the new adoption procedures are unclear. Our hope is that the Guatemalan children do not suffer the fate of other children from other Central American countries.

Guatemala- New DNA

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala has instituted a second DNA procedure.  Upon completion of the case and prior to receiving the pink slip, the child will have to be tested  for a second time with the original lab.  The second test was finally agreed to by the U.S. Embassy at the insistence of the adoption community.  It is also important to note that the original DNA testing procedures also began at the insistence of the adoption community.
